Fascinating facts about JEEPERS:

I had a one-time Sears footwear buyer contact me with some fascinating facts about JEEPERS. Here are the high points::

  1. All the JEEPERS Brand sneakers before 1970 were made by Bata, Converse, or Uniroyal.
  2. The basketball sneakers were all made by Converse in that time frame.
  3. Many boys called them "Cheaper Jeepers."
  4. Some enterprising youth in Eugene, Lane County, Oregon had a booming business removing the offending label from JEEPERS for a small fee.
  5. Sears switched to using "THE WINNER (Built by Converse)" brand name to get away from the "Cheaper Jeepers" reputation. They found the new name so dramatically improved the reputation of the product that they were able to raise their prices significantly.

The JEEPERS Line-Up for 1965:

Therefore, I'd predict that in 1965, many Baby Boom Boys started their school year with a pair of brand-new JEEPERS Brand sneakers from Sears.

Sears JEEPERS - black low-tops from 1965JEEPERS also came in black high-tops and low-tops, as well as white low-tops. All were value priced at only $4.77 a pair.

Jeepers that looked like JACK PURCELL sneakersIf one didn't like basketball-type sneakers, Sears also had this model in 1965. It bears a strong resemblance to the always-classic Jack Purcell court sneaker. (Even to the rubber "SMILE.")
